Sun Rays
The sun sends energy as ultraviolet (UV) rays, visible light (PAR), and infrared radiation (IR). You can see visible light and feel the warmth of IR, however, we cannot see or feel UV rays.
Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays has been linked to skin cancer, eye damage, and premature skin aging. Damage can start after 10 minutes of unprotected sun exposure!
Skin Damage
Although the beach might be your first thought, UV rays are everywhere! Many factors affect the intensity, like time of day, cloud cover, altitude, and latitude. Check your UV index here.
The most common types of skin damage are sunburns, skin cancer, and skin aging. We want you to look young and be healthy throughout your life - the mission behind Soteria.
Protection
There are two ways to protect yourself: Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) and Sun Protection Factor (SPF). You can think of UPF as fabric sunscreen. Plus no reapplication or greasiness required!
UPF measures the effectiveness of fabric-blocking UV rays. For example, UPF 50 shields all but 2% (1/50) of rays, blocking 98% from penetrating clothing. UPF 30 blocks 96%.
FAQs
What is UPF Clothing?
UPF clothing is constructed to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. It is made from specialty fabrics woven or treated to block UV rays, reducing the amount that reaches your skin. UPF ratings indicate how much UV radiation a fabric allows to pass through.
What do the UPF ratings mean?
UPF measures the effectiveness of fabric-blocking UV rays. For example, UPF 50 blocks 98% of skin-damaging rays - letting through 1/50 (or 2%) of rays pass. While UPF 30 blocks 96%letting through 1/30 (or ~4%) of rays
You can think of UPF as SPF in sunscreen but for fabric. Plus no reapplication or greasiness required!
What makes a fabric sun safe?
Several factors influence the UPF level of fabric. Weave density and weight, fabric composition, color, fit and coverage, stretch, additives, and condition.
Tightly woven fabrics, leave less space for UV radiation to pass, offering better UV protection. Darker colors and dense weaves enhance UPF ratings, while light and thin fabrics provide less protection. Additionally, the construction of the fabric matters, as ascertain materials like denim, canvas, wool, or synthetic fibers offer more protection. Darker colors absorb UV rays, increasing effectiveness.
Can clothing fit affect UPF protection?
Fit and coverage of your clothing impact sun protection. Loose-fitting apparel is preferable, as tight clothing can stretch and reduce the level of protection. Stretching a knitted fabric may decrease its UPF rating, as the spaces in the fabric open up, allowing more UV light to pass through. The more skin your outfit covers, the better your overall protection.
What is the UPF rating of a T-shirt?
A lightweight, white cotton T-shirt is about UPF 5. Comparatively, Seteria's t-shirts achieve a UPF 50+ rating through carefully selected fabrics focused on sun-protective characteristics including weave and density.
Is UPF clothing worth it?
Yes, UPF clothing is worth it! Since your skin is the body's largest organ, it's essential to protect it from the sun's harmful rays, especially during high UV index periods. Dermatologists recommend UPF clothing as one of the most effective defenses against UV radiation. It offers continuous protection without needing reapplication, minimizing the risk of "missing a spot" and providing consistent coverage throughout the day.
Do I need to wear UPF on a cloudy day?
Yes! While UVB rays are blocked by clouds UVA rays can penetrate clouds and glass so protection is important even indoors or on cloudy days. UV light is composed of UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays burn your skin, leaving a physical and immediate reminder of their presence. However, UVA rays are most closely associated with aging and are sneaky. They penetrate deeper into the skin and cause long-term damage without immediate signs. You’re exposed to the sun all day long, not just when you’re at the beach, pool, or during the warmer months, so don’t limit UPF wear to those days. Wearing UPF clothing regularly helps protect your skin from both types of harmful UV rays, regardless of the weather.
Is UPF clothing necessary if I already use sunscreen?
Dermatologists recommend UPF clothing as one of the best defense methods against the sun. It’s a valuable complement to sunscreen, offering continuous protection without the need to reapply. However, sunscreen should still be used on exposed skin areas, such as the face and hands.
What are UVA and UVB Rays?
These are the two types of UV rays that penetrate the atmosphere and reach your skin, both of which are linked to causing cancer.
UVA (aging) rays penetrate deep into the skin and are responsible for premature skin aging and damage. While UVB (burning) rays cause sunburn.
If you are under the sun, odds are you are being exposed to both at the same time. That is why it can be beneficial to wear Soteria's UPF Clothing.
Can UV rays go through clothes?
Yes, UV rays can penetrate clothing. This is why it's crucial to be vigilant about sun exposure. Wearing UPF-protective clothing and applying sunscreen on exposed skin can provide much better protection. Additionally, wearing a hat helps shield your face, helping you maintain youthful and healthy-looking skin for longer. Regular fabrics, like cotton T-shirts, offer minimal protection, so opting for UPF clothing ensures better defense against harmful UV rays.
